Interviewing Crimes

It’s staggering to us to think that recent research shows that basic errors in interviews still are being reported by hirers and selection panels for promotion…! Areas such as being underprepared seem trivial in comparison with people who have: fallen asleep in the interview; realised they are interviewing for the wrong role; not realizing they were in a selection process for a promotion; calling the interviewer names; being improperly dressed; bursting into tears and, even swearing or being racist or sexist..! Is it me, or should people really have no excuse for being anything else than brilliant given the amount of help and support out there….?

Protect your Personal Brand

It’s really important for managers and leaders to think about their personal reputation or ‘brand’. The image or reputation you have will determine a range of factors for you: the respect your team has for you; the speed of promotion and potential job roles in your company; the respect that your boss has for you; your ability to be involved in more significant projects or tasks. There are a couple of things to think about: why not write down the 6 or 7 adjectives you would like people to use about you when they think about you. You could then ask people what those adjectives actually are and then close the gap (if there is one) in terms of the things you say and how you conduct yourself.  Sometimes it’s handy to ask a mentor or someone you look up to determine what these adjectives should be – this tells you a lot about ‘what it takes’ in your organisation to progress! The other thing you need to think carefully about is the online reputation you have – there is no point in pretending you are a sophisticated, slick, cool operator if your Facebook profile (or any other online site) shows you drunk and incapable – remember, whatever you put online is available for people who might just check you out to see what you are ‘really’ like! You may think this is ‘common sense’, but recruiters now cite Facebook profiles as a major reason ‘not to hire’ by recruiters. And, given the economic climate, why give them the excuse?
